A Deck Cadet or Trainee Navigational Deck Officer or Nautical Apprentice is an apprentice who has to learn the basic duties of a deck officer on board a ship. The cadet has to complete the prescribed sea-time in order to take the exams of the second mate. Even though the cadet is on board they still have to complete their studies. They have to undergo various forms of training, watch-keeping with chief officer, at port with second mate and normal deck jobs with the Bosun.

DECK CADET COURSEELIGIBILITY CRITERIA:
Talking about eligibility criteria, there are three main things that they look at, during admission- Educational qualification, Medical/Physical standards and Age of the candidate. Let us focus on them each-
Minimum educational qualification required is- 10th passed (from a Recognized Board). Aspirants possessing other advanced educational qualifications may also apply. It also means that 10th passed and 12th failed students may also pursue this course!
Candidates should be physically and medically fit, as per Merchant Shipping rules. They should befit for sea faring role. Eyesight requirement is 6/6 in both eyes (unaided vision). Candidate should also not be suffering from color blindness.
As mentioned above, age of the candidate is also taken into consideration, during admission process. It has to be between 17.5-25 years of age.
SCOPE, JOBS AND SALARYDETAILS
After completing the DECK CADET course, one may work as Deck After 36 months of sea service, one may appear for 2nd Mate Examination and rise to Officer. With further sea service and examinations (oral and/or written), one may rise through the Ranks.Salary specifications differ, depending on whether it is a Merchant Navy ship or Entertainment cruise etc. Generally, it is between 20-30k Rupees at start.
